Just wondering what everyone thinks on this - Does Mcleish know his best team? Don't get me wrong it's great we have so many strikers etc - And apart from today we have had a really good start to the season and i'm really pleased despite the fact that we aren't exactly slamming in the goals, but we have seen it in the past where teams have too many players in the same position and perhaps the manager doesn't always know his best 11.
One other thing that kind of sticks out for me is James Mcfadden - I think with the players we have - And with the left wing position being a problem slightly (With Mcsheffrey out of form/lacking confidence and Quincy struggling last few games) maybe we should try him out wide. I know he is being used as a 'second striker' with a free role behind the striker, but I just can't help but think this limits us a bit as an attacking force. In my eyes although he is obviously a top player, one of the best at the club, he is never going to be an out and out striker, and maybe putting him at left wing and using 2 out and out strikers up front would be the way forward, as not only would we then have 2 out and out forward players, but we would also have Fads attacking threat, and creativity from midfield. The fact is, Mcfadden at the moment is being played instead of a striker - Kevin Phillips for instance today whom was on the bench (who has scored 3 more than Mcfadden).
The only way Mcfadden can be justified as a starter week after week in this position is if he is scoring goals, and he hasn't scored one so far this season!
This isn't a dig at him as I really like James Mcfadden as a player, I just feel he is taking a bit of firepower out of our frontline, and would be better served out wide.

For me if i were in mcliesh's position this would be the team i would put out (when everyone is fit etc)

-------------------------Taylor

Parnaby-------Taylor----------Ridgewell--------Murphy

Larsson--------Nafti---------Carsley---------Mcfadden

---------------Jerome--------O'Connor-----------------

Subs:
Doyle, Phillips, Bent, Quincy, Kelly

That would be the team i would put out atm on current form
Yes nafti had a not so good game last time but hes still out best central midfielder atm =/

I think Mcfadden is better suited to a free roaming left wing role, hes just not an out and out striker. Phillips for me has never had a good game when hes started on the bench and he is a super sub for me, likewise for Bent

Jerome and O'Connor are for me our best strikers currently

What does everyone else think?

That sounds a good team to me mate. I agree with it but would probably have Kelly instead of Parnaby and that's the only change i'd make.

I'd go similar, but with Nafti on the plane back to Tunisia!

literally anyone that can kick a ball at Blues could do it better than Nafti........worst excuse ever to pull on a Blues shirt in my humble opinion.

Having looked at varying opinions on different threads I'd try Jerome on the right and move Seb into the CM and MacFadders on the left

I would certianly experiment with this team for one game anyway if I was AM

................................Maik Taylor

Parnaby...........Martin Taylor......Ridgewell........Murphy

Jerome...........Carsley...........Larsson............McFadden

...................O Connor................Phillips

Subs- Krysiak or Doyle, Kelly, McSheffrey, Quincy, Bent

There have been far worse to pull on a Blues shirt!

Coly?
Swierczewski?
Figueroa?
Diao?
Blake?
Vine?
And since December 06 - McSheffrey

Thats only in recent times aswell.
Nafti's a good player and it shows how important to us he is that we miss him when he doesnt play.

I agree.

I am not one of these fans that likes a player that runs his socks off over a player with bit of skill but yesterday i thought Mcfadden was just plain lazy. I think it needs to have it explained to him that he can run for a loose ball. He just seems to hug the touch line and unless a ball is within 6 yards he's not intrested. Quincy made the difference in the last 10 minutes or so.

Interesting point about McFadden. I think he's too good to leave out, and he is top quality, he is our most creative player. I agree we need two up front and McFadden shouldn't be one of them, I also want to see Jerome there for his extreme pace.

So yes we could put him on the wing put I worry whether he has the pace to cope on the wing. Could we play a 4 3 1 2 formation.

---------------------Taylor----------------------

Parnaby------Taylor-------Ridgewell-------Murphy

------Larsson----------Carsley---------Nafti----------

------------------------McFadden---------------------

--------------Jerome----------------O Conner-----------

Pros- Good link up betwwen the midfield and attackers. Lots of attacking potential. Have a target man in
O Conner and Jerome has someone to thread balls in for him from Faddy and OConner.

Cons - Very little width. Midfield could get over run.

I still think Kelly is our best defender. As good as Parnaby has been, I think I'd still rather have Kelly. It's just a bit awkward having to drop Parnaby after he's been doing a decent job.

But if you're going for your best team, and hypothetically everyone is on tip top form, my starting 11 would be:

Taylor
Kelly, Jaidi, Ridgewell, Murphy
Larsson, Carsley, Nafti, Quincy
Jerome, McFadden

Subs: Doyle, Parnaby, Johnson, O'Connor, Phillips.

Ideally, I'd like O'Connor to start after his start to the season. But there's no point trying to shoe horn a player into the team if it means other people can't play in their favoured position. So I'd go with a 4-4-2 as above.

quincy over mcsheff playing at the top of his game? Since this is a silly hypothetical thread and were presuming everyone is playing well then macca would outshine quincy every day

We've not seen Quincy at the top of his game so you can't really judge who's the better player.

Absolutely spot on team for me too, i said last week try Jerome on right with his pace and power ala Walcott and try Larsson as a playmaker and yes to Mcfadd on the left a good idea, as he doesnt seem to do it as an out and out striker. This was my concern when we bought him. He has great skill but just where do you play him? maybe behind the front 2 and use him as a play maker which we are so desperate for.
